The prediction of the behaviour and spread of fires in the bush has always been fraught with a large number of unknowns, not the least of which has been the seemingly capricious nature of fire itself. Operational bushfire prediction systems, developed as they are using empirical methods, aim to predict the long-term mean spread of a bushfire based on its steady-state behaviour.
